We cannot predict the weather. Metereologists can only make very educated guesses to do so. That’s my take, anyway. I think there can’t be anything more chaotic than the weather. Point in case: what happened yesterday down here in Venezuela wasn’t told in any weather forecast I had read recently. Heavy rains fell for over six hours causing major landslides in many parts of Caracas, the capital city. The suburb where I live was blocked for more than 24 hours since all its access routes were covered in mud; I didn’t even try to come home, staying at my girlfriend’s family’s house. Some people I know took more than six hours to get here. In a shantytown nearby, three people were buried alive, but two were rescued.

All this 48 hours before we have state and city elections on Sunday.

This was an eerie reminder of nine years ago. On December 12, 1999, freshly sworn-in President Hugo Chávez held a referendum to modify the Constitution, unaltered since 1968. Rumor has it that he received serious reports of potential emergencies in the coastal state of Vargas due to heavy rains since the beginning of the month, but he chose to ignore it (mind you, I’m repeating rumors here) so he could have the highest voter turn-out on that day. The “Yes” for the referendum won overwhelmingly. But on the 15^th, it rained heavily for two hours —the equivalent of two months’ worth. And Vargas suffered dearly.

What happened yesterday was nowhere close to what happened in Vargas, but more than one remembered it. Chávez is still in power ten years later, only surpassed by early 20^th-century dictator Juan Vicente Gómez (and 27 years in power are hard to beat). While very far from being a bloodthirsty dictator, he has very much become an autocrat, having full control of the Supreme Court, the main oil, communications, electric and steel companies, the National Assembly (though not as strongly as before) and many forms of media (TV channels, radio stations, newspapers). And he is aggressive, populist and —whether we like it or not—popular. For some, to a fanatic level. This man has become the new Fidel Castro —and he has oil money to back him up.

He has made good in following the democratic tango steps, that’s for sure. Since rising to power in 1998 —thanks to the popularity he achieved after commanding a failed coup in 1992 against failing president Carlos Andrés Pérez—, Chávez has held two Presidential elections, two regional elections, two National Assembly elections, and three referenda —the one for his Constitution, a recall in 2004 and a proposal for a Constitution amendment last year. And he has won all of them in landslide victories (especially the National Assembly elections in 2005, where all opposition candidates foolishly decided not to participate in protest). All save one —last year’s referendum, where his proposal to finally turn Venezuela into a socialist state was narrowly but decisively rejected by the population (nearly five million of his supporters did not vote). Since then, his once firm grip on power seems to be slipping.

And with that, we enter this election.

The President of Venezuela has a six-year term, and can be reelected once. Governors and mayors have four-year terms, and can be reelected twice. We also elect deputies for state and city representatives, all in direct, first-degree elections. During the last elections of this type in 2004, opposition lost in all but two of Venezuela’s 22 states (Zulia and Nueva Esparta). Mostly, it was because people did not trust the National Electoral Council, thought to be in the hands of mostly pro-government officials. The fact that some of the most attractive opposition candidates were prevented to participate by the Comptroller, including ridiculously popular Leopoldo López, who was aspiring for Caracas’ First Mayorship, put fear into many a heart. But last year’s defeat in the referendum —his first one since elected President— finally made Chávez look vulnerable. And people are reacting to it. I expect a huge turnout for these elections.

But there’s more. There are several political parties that support Chávez, but his own is called the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV, its initials in Spanish). They held candidate elections earlier this year, and supposedly those candidates were elected to win this Sunday’s elections. But suddenly, there were some “candidates” in key states that many people called “paratroopers” —not chosen by the people, but by the “finger”. And in many cases, they were candidates for states where there were dissidents from the government itself —Chávez’s traitors, as he calls them.

There’s Mario Isea, former Finance Minister (he was in office for less than three months before being “elected” candidate), running for the state governorship of Aragua, a small central state ruled by Didalco Bolívar, member of the Podemos party, once one of Chávez’s biggest supporters but since last year’s referendum campaign became one of its biggest critics. Bolívar put Henry Rosales, his right-hand man, to run against Isea. Actually, this one seems to be the closest race against a dissident the government is in; Isea is really a sort of prepared guy.

There’s Willian Lara, former Assemply president and Communications Minister, sent to conquer the rancher-state of Guárico, where Eduardo Manuitt has served two terms and, while not precisely the greatest leader, has done some good to the state, hard hit by the guerilla movements of Colombia. His daughter, Lenny, is young, attractive, energetic, and well-known in the state —all things of which Lara is certainly not. Not to mention that his urban ways sharply contrast with the rugged, rural guariqueños.

There’s Jesse Chacón, former Vice-president, Interior, Communications and Defense minister, who joined Chávez in the ‘92 coup, who is running for the state of Miranda’s second-largest borough, Sucre, in spite of living in a different one for at least three years. He goes against Carlos Ocariz, a former Congressman who has worked his entire life in Sucre and has tried at least three times to become mayor of the place. Third time’s the charm, they say.

Worst of all, there’s Mario Silva, a former TV host of a program called La Hojilla (The Razor), which wants to be serious journalism but is actually just there to cause hatred toward anyone who dares oppose the government, using foul language, threats, questionable denouncements and such to basically try and make the opposition truly look like the Boogeyman, something he has more than succeeded in doing to himself, actually. He’s running in Carabobo, the third most populated state in the country, site of the decisive battle for Independence in 1821. The local governor is a former National Guard coronel called Luis Felipe Acosta Carles, once Chávez’s favorite, famous for, I kid you not, appearing on television burping loudly while inspecting a Coca-Cola plant. Amidst heavy accusations of corruption, Acosta Carles fell heavily from Chávez’s favor, and he was expelled from the PSUV, but he decided to run independently, suddenly giving this wholesome, loving image so different from his former persona (I’ve spoken with the guy in person —he’s about as sincere as a used-car salesman). Now he and Silva will likely divide the government vote, which means that the opposition candidate, former governor Henrique “Pollo” Salas Feo, who served twice before and is in turn son of also former governor Henrique Salas Römer, has a much easier path to apparent victory. The fact that he actually had good terms only helps.

But wait, it gets better. In Sucre, an eastern coastal state, he recently called the Podemos candidate, another former governor (’tis the season to look back fondly, it seems) Eduardo Morales Gil “useless”. Apparently, he forgot that not twelve months before, he had praised the same man’s former term as governor. Don’t worry, if you can catch Globovision, our only 24-hour news channel, and staunchly oppositionist, you’ll find the clip. They play it some forty times a day.

Barinas must be a particularly hurtful situation for the Pres — the small, poor, rural state is his homeland (he was born in the little town of Sabaneta de Barians), and his family rules it, to quote the movie Road to Perdition, “as God rules the Earth”. But years of corruption accusations (ah, the good ol’ corruption cases) have put Barinas people’s patience to the test, and since Hugo de los Reyes Chávez, the Pres’ father, can’t run again, he sent older brother Adán to shut up the dissent. But Julio César Reyes, the mayor of the city’s capital, challenged the mighty Chávez clan and is apparently ready to make Barinas a dissident state. Oh, this is going to hurt Hugo’s ego bad. Real bad.

An interesting case is Henry Falcón, mayor of Barquisimeto, the capital of the western state of Lara. He belongs to the PSUV, but his work in the city has been flawless to the point that even the opposition representatives in the state admire his work. After a brief spat where he almost got kicked out f the party, like Manuitt and Acosta Carles, he is now certain to become Lara’s next governor, and many say it’s almost certain that he will break away from the government in one way or another, right before turning Lara into a thriving state, or so my sources in the state tell me.

And to top it all off, he has blatantly insulted —repeatedly and harshly— Zulia’s governor, Manuel Rosales (who inexplicably now runs for the mayorship of the state capital of Maracaibo) and the opposition candidate for the state, Pablo Pérez (Rosales’ protégé). Zulians are like Yankees, folks; they protect their own ferociously. Chávez —oh, sorry, the party— selected Maracaibo’s mayor, Giancarlo Di Martino, to run against Pérez. Di Martino had, admittedly, a decent term, but he’s got accusations of ties with Colombian guerrilla over his back, not to mention Rosales’ popularity. So Chávez’s rants are definitely not helping him —last I checked, and I say this very carefully, it didn’t seem that Chávez would be going into Maracaibo to celebrate next Monday.

All this is not to say that the opposition has done a perfect job. Two formerly very popular politics —former president of the Mayor Asscoiation Saadi Bijani, and comedian Benjamin Rausseo, known as “El Conde del Guácharo”— decided to run for governors of Zulia and the coastal state of Anzoátegui, refusing to join much more popular candidates in their respective states. In Maracaibo Bijani is a gnat, but Rausseo’s move almost guarantees that he will hurt mayor Gustavo Marcano’s chances and that Tarek William Saab, a former poet and congressman, serves a second term. Something similar is happening in Bolívar, the largest state and home to many of the basic industries, where another former governor, Andrés Velásquez, tried unsuccessfully to have the opposition concentrate on him, but inexplicably, some went to a government dissident, former general Antonio Rojas Suárez, who was also part of the ‘92 coup. That could hurt Velasquez’s chances of beating current governor Francisco Rangel Gómez (what is it with the politicians in this country craving three names?!), although I recently wrote a piece at work that says otherwise.

And then, there are places where, even with the government having either no chance at all or every chance to win, opposition parties still managed to screw it up. Libertador, Caracas’ largest borough, has been under government rule forever, and the PSUV has Jorge Rodríguez running for mayor, a former, in that order, Vice-President, party coordinator and president to the National Electoral Council. (Is there something wrong with this picture?) Who’s he running against? Stalin González, a 28-year-old student leader who became famous for being one of the visible heads of the renewed student movement from last year. Yup, his first job is to be mayor of a city of two million. What in God’s name were they thinking? Oh, and let’s not forget that former mayor and Presidential candidate “I-nevber-know-when-the-fuck-to-quit” Claudio Fermín is in the race, too.

The worst case is Chacao, Caracas’ richest borough, which is perhaps opposition’s strongest fort after Zulia. López made this tiny (100,000 or so) borough a thriving one, the envy of the rest of the city, so it is expected that anyone who takes the job from him will have some pretty big shoes to fill. López was convinced that one of the members of his staff, Emilio Graterón, would be selected, but their party, Un Nuevo Tiempo, perhaps not to give López too much power, decided to go with a former congresswoman called Liliana Hernández instead. Graterón broke ranks and still signed his candidacy as an independent. Both he and Hernández were joined in the race by Ramón Muchacho, who had served as prefect for Caracas when he worked under former First Mayor Alfredo Peña. Watching these three fight over who would win in Chacao was sort of like watching three puppies fight viciously over a bone —but, but, but they’re so cute! As a consequence, during this last week of campaigning I began to see the PSUV candidate, a pretty quiet, soft-spoken and even kind-looking young guy named Willians Torrez, a lot more on TV and other media. I highly, highly doubt that we will see López giving his job to a government candidate —that would almost be like Ralph Nader winning the U.S. election— but the possibility of a punishment vote is always there. Who knows?

As you can see, we may not be as high-profile as a cool-looking, smooth-speaking, charismatic Black man winning the most powerful job on Earth, but when it comes to elections, we sure can sound interesting. This is their map of predictions for these elections, and a detailed, state-by-state prediction of results for Sunday. We’ll see on Sunday who got it right.

I truly cannot believe it. I know I’ve wrote it before, but an African-American man with a dangerous-sounding name is only 60 electoral votes (as of 10:45 pm ET) from becoming the President of the still mightiest country in the world. I truly wish all Americans that what many outside their country are hoping: that this will mean a push forward for your great country.

From a part of the world who still has so much to learn about Democracy, who are still shaking off the ghosts of militarism, here’s to wishing that this smile, this clear sky, this portarit, may be a reflection of what God has in store for all of you. From my heart, congratulations to all, and –barring a true fluke–, congratulations to President Elect Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.

What a way to resurect a blog, with those words.

A black guy, with an Arab name, with only one year in Senate, has a real, real chance, of leading a nation where only forty years ago, another black man was shot just for speaking for peace.

And what does that mean for Latin America?

More importantly, what does it mean for Venezuela?

This is all, of course assuming he wins. Early polls seem to indicate that, and I believe reasonable logic also tells us that. But John McCain was elected the Republican candidate three  months ago, and November is still a very long five months ahead. So it’s anything but locked.

But let’s just assume.

First off, historically, Democrat governments in the U.S. have been kinder on Latin America than Republican ones. Normally, Latin American countries tend to be on the left side of the political spectrum, so conservatives are inevitably going to look down. It doesn’t help right now that there’s ony one right wing governmet down here, which is Colombia, and three radical lefties: Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela, who openly criticize Bush’s government. So McCain winning would be more of the same business for us.

Secondly, McCain is an ass.

Third, Obama is such a radical change from everything. He’s been almost legendary now in saying that he would meet with whom are considered traditionally enemies of the U.S. Diplomacy above all. Not this “shoot first, ask questions later” crap.

Fourth and final, and this goes for the whole world: we will view the U.S. differently than we do now. We would be saying “Wow… a black man… a black… presidet…” U.S.A. has been traditionally seen as still being a racist society; to have Obama as president should change that.

Plus, McCain is an ass.

He should have stayed a Congressman.

Muy retrasada les presento otra opción para el día que toque alquilar una buena película. La opción de hoy ha estado en mi mente desde hace mucho rato, pues me he lanzado a redescubrir el cine de Joel y Ethan Coen desde que su No Country For Old Men resultó la más premiada en los Oscar, empecé a reencontrarme con algunas de sus citas que más me han gustado. Hay una fuerte competencia sobre cuál de sus películas es mi favorita –este dúo de directores sabe moverse sin ningún problema de la comedia al drama y siempre poniendo un toquecito oscuro en algún lado– pero creo que, hasta No Country (que aún no veo), su punto alto es sin duda O Hermano Dónde Estás.

La historia está basada en La Odisea de Homero, pero ambientada en el empobrecido sur de los Estados Unidos durante la Depresión (mediados/finales de los años ‘30, para que se ubiquen). Nos encontramos con un trío de amigos escapados de la cárcel: el ingenuo Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson), el amargado Pete (consecuente de los Coen John Turturro) y el vivísimo Ulises Everett Grant (George Clooney), que están corriendo a encontrar un tesoro escondido cerca del pueblo de Everett, donde está su esposa en separación Penélope (Holly Hunter).

¿Ya vieron las conexiones con La Odisea? Hay muchas más, pero eso quitaría parte de la diversión. Además, la película funciona demasiado bien de por sí como para que estén buscando paralelismos. Clooney en particular sorprendió mucho por su grueso acento sureño y su genial interpretación cómica, pues aún se le asociaba con el drama televisivo ER. Hay todos los elementos que uno espera de los Coen: personajes muy extraños, humor negro, alguna especie de muerte, y una resolución dramática de conflictos. Aunque Clooney fue el premiado con un Globo de Oro con su actuación, Turturro y Nelson en más de una ocasión me hicieron soltar la carcajada. Y la química entre los tres da para instantes que son joyas.

La banda sonora fue un éxito aún mayor que la película en sí, y hasta resucitó el amor por la música bluegrass en Estados Unidos. Es como si una película aquí despertara el amor por el joropo. Obviamente a una persona latina no le llamaría mucho la atención, salvo la canción central, “Man Of Constant Sorrow”, que tiene dos momentos claves en la cinta. En resumen, O Brother Where Art Thou es quizá el pináculo en comedia (junto con The Big Lebowski) de los Coen. Excelente para una tarde devedera.

Breve paseo por los blogs de cine que leo

• Slashfilm tiene de primero el trailer de la nueva comedia semi-aanimada de Disney, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, con las voces de Drew Barrymore y George López, y unas fotos con el elenco de la venidera G.I. Joe, dirigida por Stephen Sommers (La Momia) y a estrenarse en agosto de 2009. A mí no me convencen mucho las fotos; mejor estaba la de Snake Eyes que sacaron hace un mes. Ya veremos…
• Film School Rejects abre con información sobre la campaña viral de la nueva película de Mike Kyers, El Gurú del Amor, y predicen que será peor que un Aló Presidente traducido al árabe y en blanco y negro. Ustedes dirán. En mejor información, también indican que el trailer oficial de Star Wars: The Clone Wars se estrenará mañana a las 7:58 (voy a asumir hora este) en TNT, Cartoon Network y Boomerang (al menos en estados Unidos). Pendientes.
• Firstshowing.net abre con una reseña de Meteoro. Les gustó, aunque critican que se haya desperdiciado a Matthew Fox como el Corredor Enmascarado. Ocho de 10 estrellas. Nada mal.
• MTV Movie Blog (síp, MTV tiene un blog de cine) tiene una foto “exclusiva” (antes que otros blogs como los mencioandos la tuvieran) de Channing Tatum como Duke en la mencionada G.I. Joe. Se ve… molesto. Definitivamente, me quedo con Snake Eyes y Storm Shadow.

Síp, no son nada más rumores. Trataré de traerles noticias del mundo del cine también.

• En caso de que hayan estado perdidos en el hiperespacio, deben saber que hay una nueva película de la saga de la Guerra de las Galaxias a estrenarse este agosto: una animación computarizada llamada Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Se estrena el 15 de agosto, y pendientes mañana del primer trailer. Hoy se develó el poster oficial. Ustedes me dirán. (Cortesía: FirstShowing)
• Llámenlo El Espíritu de Navidad, ahora. Frank Miller, el creador de brillantes novelas gráficas como 300 y The Dark Knight Returns y co-director junto a Robert Rodríguez de Sin City (otro comic de su autoría) ahora se atreve a dirigir él solito una adaptación de otro cómic más (bueno, uno tiene que quedarse con lo que uno sabe, ¿no?) llamado The Spirit, original de Will Eisner. La película (que cuenta con actuaciones de Scrlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Samuel L. Jackson, Paz Vega y Gabriel Macht como el Espíritu) parece una liga entre El Cuervo y la anteriormente mencionada Sin City: un joven policía regresa de la muerte convertido en un justiciero enmascarado a salvar su ciudad de un demente que la quiere destruir. La película estaba programada para enero de 2009, pero ahora su estreno está pautado para el día de Navidad de este año, sustituyendo la nueva película de Viaje a las Estrellas de J.J. Abrams, que fue movida para mayo de 2009. Mala señal para los “trekkies”, pero al menos los fanáticos de las películas de cómic tendrán un regalito del Niño Jesús. • El Festival de Cine de Los Ángles arranca el 19 de junio próximo, con una muestra de cine independeinte y documentales (como “Loot”, la historia de un buscador de tesoros y su hijo), y abre con Wanted, el thriller de acción con Angelina Jolie y James MacAvoy, y cierra con Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, de Guillermo del Toro. MTV acaba de anunciar los nominados a su “prestigioso” Premio de Película, y es increíble el contraste con ceremonias que se lo toman mucho más en serio. Ni una de las nominadas siquiera se paseó por el Kodak Theatre. ¿Y a quién le importa? Estas fueron películas que la gente fue a ver para divertirse, no para pensar. Total, para algo el premio es un paquete de cotufas. Tienen que verlo así: el Oscar celebra el séptimo arte, el arte de hacer películas, mientras que los MTV Movie Awards celebra el cine, las películas que uno ve para divertirse. Digo, ¿cómo más se explican que sea Supercool la que lidera las nominaciones (5), seguida de Juno (4) y Encantada, Ligeramente Embarazada, Piratas del Caribe 3 y Transformers (cada una con 3)?

También hay que considerar que son los fanáticos los que escogen los ganadores. Si ustedes quieren, pueden ir a http://www.movieawards.mtv.com hasta el 23 de mayo para votar. Los premios se transmiten “en vivo” el 1º de junio (no sé si MTV Latino también lo pasará ese día).

Voy a inaugurar un par de nuevas en este blog (lo que me recuerda que tengo cierto tiempo que no escribo “Viaje al alquiletero” en cierto tiempo) con rumores y noticias del cine que consigo en la Web, si ustedes no tienen el tiempo de leerlas (o saben, tienen cosas más importantes que atender… como una vida…) Con el éxito de Iron Man y la promesa de que El Increíble Hulk será infinitamente mejor que su predecesora, los estudios Marvel (los mismos de los cómics) ahora están envalentonados en distribuir sus propias películas. Ayer anunciaron sus futuros planes, como la secuela de Iron Man para abril de 2010 y, pautada para el 6 de abril de 2011 (¿no es como demasiada precisión?), First Avenger: Captain America. Y de acuerdo con el blog Cinemablend, su actor favorito para interpretar al gran héroe “imperialista” es Matthew McConaughey. Saben, el ridículamente encantador tejano de 10 Formas de Perder A Un Hombre y Tiempo Para Matar.

El mejor momento que ha tenido McConaughey recientemente fue la imitación que hizo Matt Damon de él en el show de David Letterman –y eso fue hace dos años. Su última película, Fool’s Gold, se hundió más rápido que el Titanic. Creo que necesita un éxito que no implique que se quite su franela (aunque seguro lo hará). Y si de verdad quiere el papel de Steve Rogers (un enclenque de Nueva York que participa en un experimento del ejército estadoundiense para convertirse en un super soldado que defiende el ideal americano como el Capitán América) va a tener que recuperar los músculos de Reinado de Fuego y perder el acento tejano.

Pero no es sólo problema de McConaughey. Los cómics de Capitán América salieron en 1941, cuando la guerra era cosa de todos los días, y tuvieron su gran apogeo durante la Guerra Fría. El Capitán América representaba todo lo bueno que había en aquel entonces con Estados Unidos, una época en que todos estaban fascinados con el sueño americano. Pero hoy en día, creo que Estados Unidos no goza de la misma imagen que tuvo hace 60 años. ¿Coincidencia que hace un año “el paladín de la justicia y los valores americanos” cayó asesinado por un francotirador?

Lo primero que tiene que hacer Marvel es actualizar el disfraz, buscar cómo actualizar la historia (uno de los grandes aciertos en Iron Man) y bueno, ya veremos si Matthew McConaughey en efecto puede representar al más estadounidense de los super-héroes.

Desde que Tim Burton hiciera la primera Batman, los estudios de cine han chupado la teta de los super-héores y no pretenden soltarla hasta que esté buena y seca. Han habido en este ciclo fracasos estrepitosos (Ghost Rider, Hulk, Batman & Robin), intentos decentes que pudieron hacer un mejor trabajo (Daredevil, Blade) y grandes éxitos (Superman, Spiderman, Batman Begins, X-Men). Este año tenemos el privilegio de ver seis películas de super-héroes. Y si Iron Man es indicación de lo que viene, pues gente, este será un verano muy sabroso.

Iron Man es la primera película que los estudios Marvel –los mismos de Marvel Comics, de donde salen, además de Iron Man, el Hombre Araña, Los Cuatro Fantásticos y los X-men– distribuye por sí sola, sin ninguno de los estudios grandes respaldándola. Tremendo riesgo, pero era evidente que sabían lo que querían. Olvídense de las críticas que Iron Man nunca tuvo la fama de los X-Men o el Hombre Araña. Una película con este elenco, este director y esta historia no podía salir mal.

Robert Downey, Jr., se mete en la piel de Tony Stark, un multimillonario genio en física y mecánica/playboy alcohólico y empedernido, quien, en un viaje de negocios a Afgansitán, es secuestrado por un grupo terrorista que le exige construir un misil para su causa. Durante el ataque, está demasiado cerca de una explosión que lleva metralla hacia su corazón, y se le tiene que poner una batería magnética que lo mantenga con vida. En vez de construir el misil, Stark usa su tiempo para construir una armadura impulsada por la batería de su corazón que le permite escapar.

La última película de super-héroes que no parecía tal fue Batman Inicia, y fue gracias a una sólida dirección, un respeto a la historia original y un elenco perfectamente escogido. Iron Man reúne todas esas cualidades con un ingrediente adicional: mientras Batman es un alma torturada por la pérdida de sus padres, Iron Man es un ser superficial que repentinamente descubre su mundo volteado boca abajo, y descubre un alma. Lo que hace que la película (sin quitarle nada a la brillante obra de Christopher Nolan) sea mucho más ligera de digerir, y muestra a los actores gozando un puyero.

Por eso es que insisto, como tantos otros críticos (que todos saben un poquito más que yo), que nadie pudo haber hecho de Stark que no fuera Robert Downey Jr. Los paralelismos con Tony Stark –un alcóholico de vida desenfrenada que uno no puede evitar querer– no han escapado a la prensa, y el actor se lo toma a chanza igualito. Es como ver al amigo de la universidad que no podía soltar una cerveza comprar un Ferrari que vuela. La actuación puede ser un poco molesta al principio, pero ese es justamente el objetivo. Luego de su erscate, Downey entra en perfecto ritmo, mezclando humor con un profundo sentimiento de responsabilidad y humanidad. Y es divertidísimo verlo trabajar en su traje con los robots, para al final revelarlo en un estilo que sólo puedo describir como “whoa!”

El resto del elenco, aunque cae en clichés más de una vez, está igualmente bien escogido. Jeff Bridges es el mejor de ellos como Obadiah Stane, el socio Tony en Stark Entreprises, quien tiene una agenda secreta. Bridges siempre será uno de mis actores favoritos (por favor busquen The Big Lebowski de los hermanos Coen) , y el papel de villano le queda como un guante, pues siempre tiene como ese brillo en los ojos que lo hace ver como un buen tipo aunque te esté clavando un cuchillo. También se luce Terrence Howard, un actor que se ha ido creciendo con cada papel que le dan, en especial desde su nominación al Oscar en Hustle & Flow. Aquí hace de Jim Rhodes, el enlace militar y mejor amigo de Tony Stark, y que en un futuro se convertirá también en su compañero War Machine (si se fijan bien, hay una idea de que precisamente eso pasará en la secuela). Cierra el elenco Gwyneth Paltrow, quien hace de “Pepper” Potts, la asistente personal de Tony y sí, su amor secreto. Paltrow le trae mucha sensibilidad al personaje, pero es mucho más que una damisela en peligro. Un momento… ¡todos los del elenco son nominados al Oscar!

Esta era la película que Jon Favreau necesitaba para entrar en las grandes ligas de la dirección. Las escenas de acción no se pasan del tope, incluyendo la climática batalla entre Iron Man y el alter ego de Obadiah Stane, Iron Monger, y uno ni se enteraría que son efectos especiales. Quizá recuerden a Favreau como el alocado amigo de Vince Vaughn en Viviendo Con Mi Ex o lo recuerden como director en Elf de will Ferrell. Con Iron Man encontró su nicho: una película que refleje su personalidad (al menos la que yo le veo), una fiesta sin excesos. Hasta que vea The Dark Knight, esta puede que sea la mejor película de super-héroes que haya visto.
